    This is a position on the main medical campus to include any of the following shifts: Days/evenings/nights/weekends

    BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

    The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for the performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography while demonstrating exceptional patient care.

    The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for daily operations of the sonographic department, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The sonographer always maintains a high standard of medical ethics and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve.

    Responsibilities*
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations independently.
    Uses sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
    Use independent judgment to acquire the optimum diagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed.
    Ability to evaluate and communicate diagnostic information to the attending physician.
    Communicate effectively with the patient and health care team, recognizing the special needs of each patient.
    Establishes and maintains ethical working relationships and good rapport with all interrelating hospital/clinical staff or outside referring clinics.
    Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer's care.
    Maintains knowledge of and observes Universal precautions and all other precautions determined by Michigan Medicine
    Understands and applies Guest Relations skills and displays excellent customer service skills (following the Department of Radiology's Service Excellent Program) as well as demonstrating outstanding teamwork.
    Must maintain patient confidentiality at all times following all HIPPA policies.
    Effectively operate sonographic equipment and troubleshoot performance issues.
    Assists with the daily operations of the department.
    Adapt to changing environments (flexible schedules, emergency conditions, protocol development, technology advancements).
    Ability to follow established departmental procedures.
    Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
    Provides correct data entry for: exam billing (CPT/ICD-10 codes).
    Maintain proper data for: patient/exam/technologist information within the PACS system.
    Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area and maintains adequate supplies.
    Ability to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations and a high-level, fast paced medical environment.
    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

    General supervision is received from a Physician or other designated official.

    Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for ABD/OB-GYN.

    Maintains current BCLS Certification

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    The employee must be physically capable of carrying out all assigned duties:
    Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.
    Strength sufficient to: lift some patients, move heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 500 lbs.), and to move patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
    Ability to maintain prolonged arm positions necessary for scanning. Maintain awkward scanning, sitting, and standing positions for extended periods of time.
    Must be able to push, pull or lift up to 50 lbs.
    Ability to operate and use multiple computer programs in an efficient manner.
    Ability to concentrate and focus attention, thoughts and efforts on patients and equipment for varying periods of time.
    RISK OF EXPOSURE TO BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS:

    Category I Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
    Required Qualifications*
    Education:

    Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is required.
    Required Licenses/Certifications:

    Active certification by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in either ABD or OB-GYN.
    A cover letter is required for consideration for this position and should be attached as the first page of your resume. The cover letter should address your specific interest in the position and outline skills and experience that directly relate to this position.

    Desired Qualifications*
    ARDMS Registration in both ABD and OB-GYN
    1-year Inpatient hospital environment.
